Weighted blankets for ADHD: experiences, how they work, and buying guide (2025)

Around 80% of people with ADHD have sleep problems. An overactive mind, too much energy, being unable to switch off. Sound familiar? A weighted blanket helps calm the nervous system, making it easier to fall asleep. In this article, we explain how it works, what people’s experiences are, and how to choose the right blanket.

Why do people with ADHD sleep poorly?

Sleep problems in people with ADHD are not a side issue. They are a core part of the condition. Here’s why:

Delayed sleep onset

In many people with ADHD, melatonin production starts later than in neurotypical people. The body does not signal "it is bedtime" until late, which can make falling asleep take an hour or more.

Overactive nervous system

The ADHD brain struggles to switch from "active" to "rest." Thoughts keep racing, and the body feels restless. This makes it difficult to relax, precisely when it is needed.

Cortisol and dopamine

People with ADHD often have an imbalance in dopamine (the reward and focus hormone) and cortisol (the stress hormone). Too little dopamine during the day leads to compensation in the evening, while too much cortisol causes restlessness. Both interfere with sleep.

Result: a child (or adult) who is tired but cannot fall asleep. And the next day, the cycle starts all over again.

How does a weighted blanket help with ADHD?

A weighted blanket works through deep pressure stimulation (DDS). The blanket’s even pressure activates the parasympathetic nervous system, the part responsible for rest and recovery.

Specifically, DDS does the following:

  • Serotonin increases: greater calm and a more positive mood
  • Melatonin increases: falling asleep faster and sleeping more deeply
  • Cortisol decreases: less stress and physical restlessness

For the ADHD brain, this is particularly effective. The nervous system receives an external signal that it is safe to relax. When the brain itself has difficulty making that switch, the physical pressure helps it do so.

Experiences of parents and adults with ADHD

Weighted blankets have been recommended by occupational therapists for years as part of a sensory diet. What do users say?

Parents often notice the following:

  • Less struggling with bedtime
  • Falling asleep in less time
  • Waking up less often at night
  • Calmer behavior during the day after better nights

Adults with ADHD report:

  • Your mind becomes “quiet” more quickly under the blanket
  • Less worrying before bedtime
  • A feeling of safety and comfort
  • The blanket also works during the day, for example on the sofa after a busy day

Important to know: a weighted blanket does not replace therapy or medication. But as a supplement to an existing treatment plan, it can make a practical and noticeable difference.

Which weight should you choose?

The 10% rule also applies to ADHD: choose a blanket that weighs approximately 10% of your body weight.

Body weight Recommended blanket Order now
15 to 25 kg 2.4 kg → Shop 2.4 kg
25 to 40 kg 3.2 kg → Shop 3.2 kg
40 to 60 kg 4.5 kg → Shop 4.5 kg
From 50 kg 6 to 9 kg → Shop adults

With ADHD, there is usually no increased sensitivity to pressure (as can sometimes be the case with autism). Most children and adults with ADHD find the weight comfortable right away.

What should you look for when buying?

1. Weight

10% of body weight. This is the baseline. Too light has little effect, while too heavy is uncomfortable and unsafe for children.

2. Fabric

Choose a breathable fabric such as organic cotton. This is especially important with ADHD medication, which can increase body temperature, to prevent overheating.

3. Breathability

A blanket you use every day should be easy to wash. A removable cover saves a great deal of work.

4. Usage situations

Consider a blanket that your child can also use during the day: on the sofa, while reading, or after a busy day at school. The calming effect is not limited to bedtime.

Frequently asked questions

Does a weighted blanket really help with ADHD?

Yes, for many people with ADHD it is an effective aid. Deep pressure stimulation helps calm the nervous system, making it easier to fall asleep. It does not replace treatment but complements it.

Can my child also use the blanket during the day?

Absolutely. Many parents use the blanket after school or during homework. 20 to 30 minutes is enough to feel the calming effect. Then put the blanket away for at least 30 minutes.

Is a weighted blanket safe with ADHD medication?

Yes, there are no known interactions. Do pay attention to the fabric choice: some ADHD medications can increase body heat, so choose a breathable, lightweight fabric.

Does it also work for adults with ADHD?

Absolutely. Many adults with ADHD use a weighted blanket to calm down more quickly before bedtime. Choose an adult size and follow the 10% rule.

Is a weighted blanket reimbursed?

In most cases, not through the basic health insurance. Read our article about reimbursement for more information.
